Homicide detective Tori Hunter was used to doing things her way. But even after six different partners in seven years, she was not prepared for the hot-tempered Samantha Kennedy. Samantha, on the other hand, was trying to juggle a new job and a demanding boyfriend and now finds herself with an even greater challenge—being partnered with the most difficult detective in the entire squad. After a brief terrorist scare disrupts their serial killer investigation, the two women find themselves growing closer. Sam begins to question the relationship with her longtime boyfriend, and Tori, never one to allow anyone to get too close, begins to feel her defenses slipping in Sam's presence. While facing a serial killer and drug deals gone bad, the two detectives struggle with their feelings, trying to maintain their professional relationship while keeping their nearly flammable physical relationship in check.

I was a bit disappointed with the book. Gerri Hill is usually a wonderful storyteller, but I feel this one had too many issues. So it was an X &G type story, that's cool I like ubers, but I had a hard time with all the head-hopping and loss of continuity of which character was speaking or thinking. It threw me out of the story. Then there was the rape scene. I thought it was overkill and a major trigger to a lot of readers of lesfic. There could have been a better way to handle the "torture". Shock value violence against women is just so last decade, especially in lesbian books. I also thought it was totally unrealistic for a couple to engage in sex after only a few days following an attack. The story would have been awesome otherwise. The storyline was wonderful and the intimacy was beautiful, I just couldn't get over the poor editing of the head-hopping and dialogue and the rape.

This novel was okay. I didn't feel that the rape scene was pertinent to the development of the story line or main characters. Dialogue was very cheesy at times, which I felt like it was out of character. Not my favorite Hill novel.
Ignore the corny headline and just read the words! lol. My first Gerri Hill book and it was a great success. I am not just giving 5 stars for the hell of it, I really enjoyed this story. It had it all for me suspense, intrigue, and romance despite that it is a cop story. Hill managed to keep this funny, honest, interesting, and realistic. The characters had depth and they were believable, she took her time and let us know them against the backdrop of a murder case. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting something a little different. I did not fee cheated at the end like I have felt lately with other lesbian romance stories, I got that feel-good-feeling in the end that you get when you read a good story.
I love characters with dark pasts and Tori Hunter has one. It's kept her from opening up to anyone. Enter Samantha Kennedy. She's sure of herself and career oriented much to her boyfriend's chagrin. Between the serial murder and a few other surprises along the way, the two homicide detectives keep getting thrown into life altering situations. While some are painful in the extreme, in the end it helps each finally understand what they have. A rich friendship that keeps growing into something so much more. Can they work so closely together and not let their personal lives affect their working relationship? As usual, a wonderfully done story from Gerri Hill. Looking forward to the sequels.
I’m a sucker for crime procedurals. I loved Castle, Bones, the Mentalist etc.
This seems like a mix between those series and buddy cop movies except with two female leads.
I would love to give it a four star but there were just too many pov whiplash errors for my liking.
A little more editing would have made the novel better. I hated the characters at first, but quickly grew to like them and by the end was hoping that nothing would happen to them.
Except the boyfriend. He sucks.
Pick it up if you like the vibe of cop shows but in book form.
Having recently read Lori L. Lake's rendition of 'Xena and Gabrielle join the police force' in Gun Shy... I was not altogether opposed to meeting yet another tall, dark-haired, muscular, super sexy, anti-social butch cop who comes out of her shell via the sunny blonde and beautiful charms of her new and more sociable partner.

Fan fiction is actually pretty fun! Yes, yes, I know I'm a tad late in discovering ¨uber-Xena¨ type stories... but the Xena and Gabrielle chemistry is so electric and universally adored that even a more distant likeness like Tori Hunter and Samantha Kennedy conjure this magic.

So homicide detective Tori Hunter is our brooding protagonist in this story. She can't hold a partner- at work or personally. She's just too emotionally troubled to let anyone close. At 37 she still hasn't worked out some extreme trauma she experienced as a kid and apparently her obnoxious and reckless behavior at work hasn't forced her into some much needed long-term therapy with the department shrink. She is simply permitted to be the (somewhat juvenile) resident rogue.

Along comes ¨hot-tempered¨ Samantha Kennedy (according to the back of the book), her new partner... who is anything but ¨hot-tempered.¨ Hot, maybe... persistent, for sure... but she's not swimming in passion and anger. Breaking a mirror doesn't equate with passion as much as it symbolizes changing herself. If anything, passion is a repressed part of herself upfront. She doesn't know herself at all and is rather passive. So it's no surprise that at 34 she's still wandering aimlessly in straight-ville with a controlling boyfriend in tow. When you don't take charge of yourself... others won't hesitate to do so.

Together these two search for a serial killer who is targeting young lesbians... which in turn provides us with a convenient setting of queers to observe for our closeted straight woman. The charm of this book is not just that it is reasonably well-written with wonderful character chemistry and moves along at an easy pace... but that the romance is set at the forefront.

I don't want to say that the police drama is a subtext, exactly, because it is plausible enough... but it's there to give these two every opportunity to get closer, visit lez bars together and even behave like girlfriends. This is a very sweet union... which is why it's a little surprising when violence actually does ensue. There is a rape scene that I almost want to say was just kinda glossed over... but it really didn't feel that way. Again, this is not a book that wants to focus on dysfunction and depressing stuff... it is first and foremost a romance and manages to stay as much despite the drama that emerges.

The one annoying factor for me about this story is the needy boyfriend who doesn't go away until, like, page 227... and then somehow STILL manages to resurface again, and again, lol... geez. GO AWAY ALREADY!! Coming out story or not... this author allowed way too much time to this clown. I'm not sure if he was supposed to be amusing (not) or prepped as a stalker for book 2... but if nothing else he is more evidence of Samantha's passive nature. If she were truly hot-tempered he'd of been found in a ditch by page 23.

It is Samantha's vulnerability and femininity that appeals most to Tori and breaks down her defenses... Sam is someone Tori instinctively wants to protect.

Whatever its little flaws, you're still gonna get hooked on this sexy couple.
I've read and enjoyed several Gerri Hill books. This was not one of them. SPOILER ALERT There is a graphic rape scene that is handled so poorly and disrespectfully. As if any person would have sex a few days after being brutally raped. As if any person just needs to cry once and is magically "over" being brutally raped. I really wanted to like this book but the handling of the rape story line really got under my skin and was just completely unbelievable. To imply that any person could truly enjoy sex just a few days after suffering such a violent violation of their body is extremely damaging to any rape victim. I am disappointed and disgusted that so many people have given raving reviews for this book.
